Dutch Waste Management

In 2013 I initiated Dutch Waste Management. Dutch Waste Management is a cutting-edge platform of specialists and companies for Waste Water and Energy innovations based on developed icon projects in the Netherlands in the last decades.

Since the start of this platform, several innovative projects have been developed, such as:

- Compliance Model Waste Water and Energy regions

- Energy Potential Mapping

- Waste separation concepts

- Anaerobic Digestion

- Worldbank tender / IFC ISWM model Ukraine city

- Expression of interest EU tender Efficiency Food chain together with EU, Indian and Chinese partners

In this period we have been working with partners in Ukraine, Greece, Bulgaria, USA, Thailand and India (EU-India SAHYOG project). Other countries where I've been worked the last years, such as Turkey, Canada, Russia, Poland and China will follow the coming year.

Webinar Climate Finance Biomass

The increased use of biomass to generate energy is one of the main ways to reduce the emissions of CO2 and mitigate climate change. It is therefore a cornerstone of climate change policies in many countries and also in the international debate on climate change. At this moment – February 2013 – the market may look bleak to many: prices on the international carbon markets have collapsed and it is hard to predict when they will recover.

Adriaan Korthuis, founder/director at Climate Focus, has provide today insights in a webinar that was organised by NL Agency ; the opportunities and the limits of climate finance for biomass projects.
Issues addressed in the webinar were:
- The status of international climate change negotiations: from Durban and Doha to a new climate change agreement;
- The possibilities of carbon credits: CDM, voluntary markets, new carbon markets;
- Other types of project support: trust funds, sustainable energy funds, climate change funds;
- Biomass certification.

Canada

Last half year I supported Orgaworld Canada on business development in the Industrial Commercial Institution (ICI) waste market. Therefore I'd made market analyses and visit a lot of companies of the Food Chain in Ontario / Canada together with marketing manager Travis Woollings.
We also visited with representatives of Weston Food and Loblaw Orgaworld Greenmills in Amsterdam and explained the working of this modern bio refinery plant.

University Masterclasses Ukraine

Last year I educated three Masterclasses 'Waste as an energy source':

The Master Class Sustainable energy for Ukraine organized by Saxion University (professor Johan Wempe) and Netherlands Ukrainian Sustainable Energy Platform (NUSEP). 
Between April and June the participants worked in teams on an assignment. 
Each team of five students had to present a business case. From the moment of matchmaking with my students till the final presentations they were very enthusiastic about the waste theme.
Recently I'd get a reaction of one the students that he wants to be graduated on my theme!

Trade mission Warsaw

Poland is being the only country that seems immune to the economic meltdown on our continent. As the Eurozone’s economies declined by 4,3% in 2009, Poland grew by 1,6%. Growth peaked to more than 4% last year. Even next year the prognosis is 3,5%. And with only two borders to cross, it is no wonder that Dutch companies are increasingly discovering the vast opportunities this 40 million people market provides. At present more than 1.500 Dutch enterprises, large and small, are active in Poland – taking the Netherlands to the top 10 of investors in Poland. 
I joined a successful trade mission 22-24 May 2012 together with Melanie Schultz van Haegen, Minister for Infrastructure and the Environment. Together with business relatives of Tebodin Poland and Imtech Poland I visited a meet and greet reception with the minister.

Holland Turkey Business Forum: 400 years diplomatic relations

PwC, ING, Agentschap NL en Fenedex met hun partners organiseren op 17 april in de Passenger terminal in Amsterdam een Business Forum over de 400 jaar diplomatieke relatie tussen Nederland en Turkije.

Het seminar is ter ere van het bezoek van President Gül aan Nederland van 17 t/m 19 april 2012. Het doel van het seminar is om de bilaterale economische relatie tussen Nederland en Turkije te versterken en te intensiveren. President Gül woont samen met een delegatie van ministers en CEO’s uit Turkije het seminar bij. Van Nederlandse zijde zijn Prins Willem-Alexander en Prinses Maxima aanwezig.

Orgaworld

In 2012 I was a Since Representative of Orgaworld in Poland and Canada (Ontario).

Orgaworld is a young innovative and fast growing international organization in the field of Organic Waste Processing. Its focus is to process Source Separated Organics, ICI waste, Residential Waste and MSW into valuable end-uses such as energy, fuels and compost products. Orgaworld is using its proprietary technologies: wet and dry anaerobic digestion, tunnel bio-stabilization, and aerobic (tunnel) composting.

Orgaworld forms part of Shanks Group Plc. (www.shanks.co.uk). Orgaworld designs, builds, owns and operates all of its facilities in the Netherlands, UK and Canada.

The company currently is able to process > 1 mio tonnes of organic waste annually and is seeking further expansion in North America, Europe and Asia.

USP: Orgaworld Designs, Builds, Owns and Operates all of its facilities and does not need specific processing technology suppliers to establish its business.

Kamyanets-Podilsky test MSW

Last week about 500kg waste of Kamyanets-Podilsky in Oekraine were analysed. All the city waste is landfilled till now and the analyse is part of the feasibility study on waste to energy. About 80 kgs were construction waste and the rest municipal solid waste (380kg per person).
Today the first stage of the pilot on separate collection starts. An unique moment. Next month we'll evaluate it and also will introduce organic waste separation for appartments.
The organic household waste will be used for biogasproduction. Therefore a business (base) case was sent to interested parties for financing.

Pilot Afvalscheiding Kamyanets-Podilsky Oekraïne

De bestaande rolcontainers die dagelijks geleegd worden in Kamyanets-Podilsky in Oekraïne staan na aanpassing gereed voor de proef met afvalscheiding bij een drietal appartementencomplexen. De glas-, papier- en kunststofstromen zullen in de eerste fase gescheiden worden van de rest van het huishoudelijke afval. De bewoners krijgen hiertoe een jaarkalender met instructie. Parallel hieraan zal een educatieprogramma bij onder meer scholen gestart worden. Met de verkoop aan diverse regionale afnemers zullen de eerste inkomsten gegenereerd worden. Met 80% respons van de burgers zal het stortvolume met één derde deel afnemen. Twee vliegen in één klap.
In de tweede fase zal de collectie van organisch afval geïntroduceerd worden, waarmee biogas door middel van vergisting geproduceerd zal worden. Eén van de prioriteiten in het Energy-efficiency programma van de stad (en geheel Oekraïne).
In februari 2012 zullen de resultaten van de volledige informatiestudie gepresenteerd worden aan het stadsbestuur en vervolgens aan overige steden die aangesloten zijn bij de Covenant of Mayors.
Twee weken na de operationele start van de samenwerking tussen de gemeentelijke diensten, NUSEP-partners CREM en NSU en De Bruijn Advice & Practice (http://www.peetdebruijn.nl/) worden de afspraken voortvarend ter hand genomen!

Informatiestudie Afvalscheiding en productie biogas Kamyanets-Podilsky

Het komende halfjaar zal De Bruijn Advies & Realisatie vanuit NUSEP een informatie-studie uitvoeren met een aantal partners omtrent de introductie van afscheiding en de productie van biogas in Kamyanets-Podilsky.
Kamyanets-Podilsky is een van de oudste steden in Oekraïne en is gelegen aan de Smotrych rivier in het westen van Oekraïne, in het Noord-Oosten van Tsjernivtsi in de Oblast Chmelnytsky. De huidige geschatte bevolking is ongeveer 100.000 inwoners.
Op basis van een uitgebreide vragenlijst over de bestaande en gewenste afvalinfrastructuur heeft de gemeente inmiddels data aangeleverd. Medio november zal een eerste analyse besproken worden en zal om een goed beeld te krijgen van de samenstelling van het huishoudelijk afval een scheidingsproef ter plaatse worden voorbereid. Op basis van de beschikbare informatie wordt een aantal toekomstsenario's geschetst die de basis zullen vormen voor het ontwikkelen van een businesscase. Hierbij zullen ook financieringsmogelijkheden in beeld worden gebracht.

De resultaten van deze studie zullen ook gepresenteerd worden aan de Covenant of Mayors, een samenwerkingsverband van zesentwintig Oekraïnse gemeenten.

Inspirerende voordracht Ruud Koornstra bij Oostlanddag

Ruud Koornstra besloot gisteren op inspirerende wijze de Oostlanddag 2011. Hij is de drijvende kracht achter en oprichter van Tendris. Met zijn aanstekelijke enthousiasme ontwerpt hij samen met anderen sterke en innovatieve producten en diensten. Hij weet als geen ander de verbinding aan te gaan met andere partijen om niet alledaagse, maar eigenlijk heel voor de handliggende doelen te bereiken, een gezondere en duurzamere maatschappij, waarbij hij uitgaat van de kracht van mensen.

Ruud Koornstra investeert in duurzame projecten, die veel opleveren. Een bekend voorbeeld is zijn promotie van de Ledlamp.

De Rabobank Zuid Holland Zuid initieert samen met onder andere VNO NCW Oostland en LTO een viertal innovatieve samenwerkingsprojecten waaronder Duurzaamheid. In dit project zal ik samen met onder meer Kees van der Helm (Vander Helm Bedrijven) en Léon Ammerlaan (Ammerlaan The Green Innovator) tijdens de Oostlanddag 2012 onze doelstellingen presenteren. Om ontwikkelingen te stimuleren is door de in onze regio samenwerkende partijen het Innovatie Centrum Oostland opgericht.

Dutch expert will advise Lviv regional council

Tijdens de handelsmissie, georganiseerd door de Nederlandse Ambassade in Oekraïne van 19-22 september, werd na ontvangst door de plaats-vervangend gouverneur (zie foto) op 20 september binnen 24 uur een vergadering van de regionale Milieucommisie belegd om mij separaat te consulteren. Regionale omroep ZIK maakte een TV intervieuw en plaatste een artikel naar aanleiding van deze extra vergadering. Onderstaand de door de ambassade opgestelde vertaling.

In the Lviv regional council the meeting took place with the Dutch expert in the area of development and implementation of projects on solid waste management.

Independent consultant Mr Peet de Bruijn met the First Deputy Head of Lviv Regional Council Mr Peter Kolody and deputies - members of the standing committee on environment, natural resources and recreation.

Mr. De Bruijn informed, that he is visiting Ukraine for the fourth time already and that he is currently working out suggestions of waste recycling for the city of Kamyanets-Podilsky.

The First Deputy Head of Lviv Regional Council Mr Peter Kolody and the head of Environment Commission Mrs Irina Seh reported to the Dutch representative about waste related problem in Lviv region, including the situation in Lviv city with waste disposal site.

"The government has declared for many years the search of investors, but still we are facing the very large environmental problem, because we have a number of serious health problems of people living in the villages around the waste disposal site," - said Mrs. Seh.

Mr. De Bruijn advised to authorities of Lviv to start solving the problem from waste separate sorting.

"Judging from the experience of the Netherlands, the best way to recycling is waste sorting. If you have a good relationship between government and citizens - it helps in recycling. In the Netherlands 83% of waste is recycled because the residents understand the problem. What can you do is to sort paper, metal, textiles and many other wastes. 85% of this waste can be re-use if really know how to utilize waste properly, "- said the expert.

The foreign expert currently could not provide any specific proposals regarding Hrybovytskyy waste disposal site. He asked Lviv regional council for concrete data and figures regarding Hrybovytskyy waste disposal site, and he promised to study this information and provide it for consideration of foreign companies that might be interested in re-cultivation of this site.

Ondernemersvereniging Pijnacker-Nootdorp

Als lid van onze plaatselijke ondernemersvereniging ontving ik vandaag het vernieuwde en prettig lezende nieuwsbullitin. Onder bezielende leiding van onze voorzitter, directeur Arthur Venselaar van Milieu Express, heeft Christy van der Sman van Vandeez Reclame en nieuw ontwerp ontwikkeld en Manuela Bijl en Sjaak Oudshoorn de teksten verzorgd. De artikelen van de Oostlanddag van 13 oktober a.s. en het ondernemersfonds / OZB-projectgroep zijn aanraders.

Roteb Eco Monument

Op het voorterrein van Roteb Kleinpolderplein te Rotterdam heeft kunstenaar Jan Eric Visser de laatste hand gelegd aan het Roteb Eco Monument. In samenwerking met medewerkers van bijna alle onderdelen van Roteb kon hij zijn bijzondere ontwerp realiseren. Het kunstwerk staat voor duurzaamheid in de breedste zin van het woord, zoals Roteb dat belangrijk vindt. Kunstcritica Anne Berk en Geert Verbeke van de Verbeke Foundation verlenen hun medewerking aan de onthulling op 5 oktober.

Ik ben er trots op dat Jan Eric dit nieuwe project heeft kunnen realiseren. De afgelopen jaren ben ik de trotse eigenaar van drie werken van Jan Eric geworden en ben daarnaast betrokken geweest bij de realisatie van zijn Aquadyne project. Dit beeld is ten toon gesteld bij Ram Foundation en vervolgens de wereld rond getrokken via Tokyo en Tel Aviv. Eén van zijn kunstwerken prijkt sinds 2009 op mijn website http://www.peetdebruijn.nl/.

Afval Loont

Trots als een pauw dat, mijn reeds jarenlange visie op de waarde van afval, in mijn gemeente Pijnacker-Nootdorp op 17 september 2011 voor een deel praktijk wordt met de Nederlandse primeur van een vernieuwend afval inzamel- en scheidingsysteem: Afval Loont. Pijnacker-Nootdorp is de eerste gemeente waar dit systeem (op proef) wordt ingevoerd en alle inwoners van de gemeente kunnen meedoen.

Welk afval is geld waard? Voor gesorteerd oud papier en karton, kunststof verpakkingsmateriaal, textiel en kleine elektrische (huishoudelijke) apparaten kunt u geld ontvangen. Het bedrag is afhankelijk van de afvalsoort en de hoeveelheid. De volgende (voorlopige) tarieven worden tijdens de proef gehanteerd:

- oud papier en karton € 0,05 per kilogram
- kunststof verpakkingsmateriaal € 0,25 per kilogram
- textiel € 0,25 per kilogram
- kleine elektrische (huishoudelijke) apparaten € 0,05 per kilogram

Een gemiddeld gezin kan via dit systeem ongeveer € 75,00 per jaar sparen. Wekelijks worden de spaarsaldo’s gecontroleerd. Zodra op een pas een saldo van € 10,00 is gespaard, wordt uitgekeerd op een geregistreerde bankrekening(en). Dit is ook het minimale bedrag dat wordt uitgekeerd.

Recycling and Waste Management Exhibition (RWM)

This week I'll visit the Recycling and Waste Management Exhibition (RWM), the leading exhibition for the recycling and waste management sector in UK. As a result of market feedback and to reflect the needs of a rapidly growing sector, in December 2010, RWM merged with Futuresource (Europe’ Sustainability event) which was organised by the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) and the Environmental Services Association (ESA). The newly merged exhibition has been renamed ‘RWM in partnership with CIWM’ for 2011 and is set to feature more than 650 exhibitors across an indoor and outdoor exhibition space at the NEC in Birmingham, UK.

Trade Mission to Lviv (Ukraine)

From 19 till 22 September 2011 a multisectoral trade mission to Lviv, a host city for the European Football Championship 2012 (EURO 2012), will be organized by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Ukraine.
The objective of the trip is to explore the market and to establish new contacts in the city and Lviv region.
For me is an individual match-making program prepared with project-, financial- and govermental representitives who are active with Waste to Energy.
In addition participants of the mission will be provided with the possibility to learn about business opportunities and business climate in the region from experts active in Ukraine and local governmental authorities, to visit potential partners and to meet Dutch companies active in Lviv.
